Well, our baseball team is getting fucked, but at least we're getting a superhero.  Maybe if the Scarlet Spider works out, we'll get a major league hero in a few years.

Light rail.

I've never been on that thing as I've been away for a long time but doesn't it just run in the downtown area? I'd love to see him stuck in traffic on 1960 or some shit.

It runs from UH downtown through midtown and the medical center to just south of the Dome.

And (subject to a delay due to a purchasing fuck up) to the Galleria and points north, east, west and south of downtown.

Is the east downtown to downtown line the reason that Rusk and Capital are completely torn up?

Metro/Light Rail is a big fuck-up.

Supposed to be open by 2012...

Apparently they ordered rolling stock from Spain, which would have negated a near-billion dollar Federal grant (which requires them to buy American).  They had to back track (pun intended) and re-do the entire procurement.  AFAIK, the University line, which is the crux of the project as it would connect the downtown lines to the uptown line and the proposed NW commuter rail, is still not a done deal.

IMHO, the light rail system - including the University Line - is a very smart move for the city.  If commuters have the option to take the train into 4 main business sectors, being the Galleria, Greenway Plaza, Downtown and the Med Center, they'll take it.  Gas is now solidly above $3/gal and has been for a while.  No reason to expect it come down in the short or long term*.  Plus, the NW commuter line could be extended all the way to Austin to complement the high-speed link proposed between Houston and Dallas.

* BP thinks oil skimmed off the gulf shale oil will make the US self-sufficient by 2030.  But their projection assumes a drop in relative demand for oil and it does not suggest that prices will be coming down as a result.

The US could be energy self sufficient right now, if people were willing to pay $1,200/bbl for oil and $40/gallon for gas.

I love the light rail.  I'd take it in a heartbeat if it were available from the northside to downtown.

I'd take it from the galleria to UH also. It would beat sitting in traffic on 59. That is not why they are Fuck-ups.

I'm sure there are a million reasons why "they" (whomever they are) are fuck ups.  Light rail is still a great idea.

Having spent the past weekend in Manhattan, and after opting for a $9 train ride instead of a $60 cab fare to get to the airport in Newark, I can't wait for the light rail to go more places here.
