Can you provide a professional's view on the upcoming hurricane season?
The local talking heads are already peeing themselves because it's potentially going to be an active one.

I was thinking about that the other day. One of the worst possible scenarios is a Gulf hurricane that picks up a lot of that oil and dumps it inland.

Sure thing. Indications are that it will be a whopper. The National Hurricane Center, assisted by the Climate Prediction Center has just issued their formal season forecast. I don't recall them ever forecasting such large quantities of all storm types (tropical storm, hurricane, major hurricane). A good, not particularly technical read and can be found here: http://www.cpc.noaa.gov/products/outlooks/hurricane.shtml The NOAA presser and very high-level synopsis can be found here: http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2010/20100527_hurricaneoutlook.htmlI'll post a detailed forecast document cobbled together from discussions from friends and peers sometime later this afternoon.

Ive read that this is a very light oil that evaporates and dissipates more easily than a refined oil like the valdez dumped. While pushing it inland is certainly bad, I wonder if storms might also churn/spread it in a way that allows it to evaporate more quickly Of course, storms also mean that there cant be crews out there cleaning it up...

Forget all this stuff. I just need a good soaking rain in Greeneville to avoid a forfeit in little league tonight. Can you make it happen Das?

According to a scientist I heard on NPR, the oil on the water may disperse or weaken a hurricane. Or, because the oil on top of the water absorbs the sunlight, it makes the water a lot warmer which will make the hurricane even fiercer.

I admittedly don't know anything about oil, but apparently now they've got the lighter-colored oil on the surface and clouds of darker oil down below. Don't know what that translates into with hurricanes, but they did say they were concerned about the darker oil. Gotta love it when "experts" hedge their bets.

You obviously misunderstand Das's powers. If you're looking for a losing streak, he could easily help you out though.

Look to the southeast, not at the big, towering storms on the ridges to the northwest. These storms poping to the east will fill in but better coverage will be as the day/evening go on. I clicked to see if Das had responded to my zinger 30 minutes ago, and just woke up on my back on the floor of my office. That is one seriously weird radar picture.

I started to imagine the wardrobe that would involve 30 minutes ago, and just woke up on my back on the floor of my office living room. That is one seriously weird radar picture mental image.

Today's the day. Hurricane season has officially started. Who's your favorite new named storm?Hermine is just too Harry Potterish for my tastes. It would suck to get hit by something named Hermine. Igor, however, is an awesome name for a Hurricane. Just think about all great Young Frankestein jokes we can make. "If you are evacuating, walk this way." Otto is pretty cool too.
