I loved seeing that coach dart out there to protest. I wonder how long it's been since that guy ran that fast.

That's fantastic. I wonder what the coach was protesting.

I think he was saying his catcher tagged the runner. What else could it have been?

Somersaulting outside the base path?

He seemed to still be in line with the basepath, but perhaps he was arguing esoteric points regarding whether or not the basepath is a two dimensional construct or three...

Bingo.
As far as I know, the "baseline" is a two-dimensional area that extends to infinity in the third. I think in high school and little league such a leap would be against the rules, but I think that's more of a safety issue than a technicality with the baseline.

I'm reasonably sure college rules also say you have to slide. You certainly can't bowl over the catcher, but perhaps since he didn't make contact, it's acceptable?

I know of no league where you have to slide. Many say you can't initiate contact, but if you want to run up and stop, or do a little dance, or spin around in a circle, or run back to the previous base...all are acceptable.

You're right. College rule is you can't attempt to dislodge the ball (i.e., run the catcher over). So, this move was perfectly legit. Not sure what the opposing manager's objection was.

"Objection!" "Why?" "Because it's devestating to my case!" "Overruled." "Good call!"
