Yeah, I'm not sure I'm buying the idea that Garner or any manager, even Cooper, would be unaware of perception irregularities. All it would take is a single ball hit down the third base line that you just know is going foul and have it land well in play to realize that your perception is a little off from where you're sitting. Plus, I've noticed that most times when a coach gives positioning instructions they pop out of the dugout to do so. I'd always assumed this was because they want to be more visible but it could also be to improve their own perspective.

Also, in a game situation like that, aren't you supposed to guard the line in a "no doubles" configuration?  Regardless of who's on deck or in the hole (NTTAWWT)?

I object to the final line:

Makes history?  More like "hit a home run that was ultimately meaningless".  It was a shock at the time, but not "historic" at all.  Even if you accept the premise that it fucked up Lidge for all time, it's still not historic.  It's just one player having head problems the same as many, many players have over the years.  Knoblauch and Ankiel jump to mind instantly.

It shouldn't have been historic, but given the treatment it's been given since then, I think it has become historic. If you some generic ESPN producer put together a five-minute MLB highlight reel to represent the '00s, I bet it would be on there.

The fact that they're all 5, and distracted by jangly things, does not make it historic.  Lane's catch of weak looper to close down Busch Stadium for good and put the Astros in their first World Series is much more historic, by anyone's definition, save ESPN.  I know you know this, I'm just saying...

Ok, geniuses. Email Ensberg and tell him he is lying or does not know what he is talking about.

You really think Eckstein was going to turn around on Lidge with two strikes to get it down the line??

Yeah, I like the logic leading up to the decision, but then the story itself just doesn't add up.  How had this illusion never come up before and been accounted for?

How many previous times had Garner been positioning fielders with the franchise's first trip to the World Series on the line?

Mistakes happen.

I think, if Ensberg was off the line, that little fuck would try to slug-bunt it that way - which is what all his "hits" were pretty much anyway.  Not saying he could do it, but I bet he'd try.

I don't mind him taking on this topic, mostly because it's an opportunity to hear from someone who was actually there, as opposed to the national media's party line about Lidge getting "destroyed" and all the bullshit.  His off-hand comment about defensive placement being the real nail in the coffin is enlightening, and if he goes further down that trail, I'm all for it.

I still don't think anyone outside of Houston knows the Astros won that series.

MoBerg on steroids, etc. (first saw it at AstrosCounty)

I'm a little more surprised by his having smoked weed than by his popping greenies.

From "Ryan" further down in the comments:

One topic I’d enjoy hearing your thoughts on is the importance of plate discipline, one of your greatest strengths as a player, and whether this is a skill that a player can develop over time if they work hard enough at it.

Awesome.  One of my greatest strengths is not nailing super models.

There's an interesting cameo in that thread from a once familiar TZ participant.

She is such a tool. I argued with her for a time about MoBerg's inability to swing at hittable pitches in key situations with men on base, and her reply was always the same-- OBP OBP OBP....Good to see Ensberg himself say exactly what I told her. He wasn't ready to hit.

That probably wasn't the answer she wanted to hear, so I'm sure she'll ignore it and continue along her ignorant way.

Both she and the aforementioned gorvellor consistently display the inability to listen to or even recognize anything contrary to their watered-down statistical interpretations and hunches.
