Released by the Pads today. Doesn't appear to have an injury history (except when he gets bull-rushed by Prince Albert), though the release itself could imply something about his recovery. He'd be average/above average as a hitter (if 2008 is considered a wash), and the only thing that I recall about him behind the plate is that he had trouble with Tim Wakefield's knuckler in Boston. Anybody else think he'd be worth a look?

He's a very sad case. He thinks he's Ethel Merman.

He had very solid years with the bat in 06 and 07 and we're in the market for a catcher.

Pass. He's never started more than 103 games in a season (his next highest is 80 games started). He hit .333 in 2006. But that was over just 249 at-bats. He hit .285 in 2007 over 389 at-bats (his longest season). Otherwise he's hit no better than .244, and that was in 2003. Too often injured and inconsistent.

He'll make a decent backup for someone; but I presume the Astros think they already have a couple of those.

Petco deflated his numbers somewhat, but he is still a good hitting catcher. A solid lefty bat. I know nothing of his D.
2007 Away: .330/.386/.456 2006 Away: .353/.404/.522
One hell of an improvement with the stick from what the Astros have now, IMO.
Are they opening up a slot for Ausmus in SD?

He'll be 31 for next season and is often injured. I'd expect Houston to be looking for someone more reliable.

That reliable someone may not be out there, and the Astros are in dire straights at the C position, right now. Bard is from Texas Tech. He was a victim of Pooholes cheap shot slide. He's a lefty bat that could platoon at catcher with Q. He might sign an incentive type deal for short term. These are all positives in my eyes.

Wade may go there. From the article cited in this NYCU:(Wade talking about Towles and the open catcher spot) "This offseason, we have to at least be paying attention to the catching market in the event things don't work out at the beginning of Spring Training."

A few questions concerning the catching situation... Didn't the Astros draft a pretty highly rated catcher in the very early rounds a couple of years ago? If so, how has he been doing? Is the Coby Clemens catcher experiment still a legit project or was it ever? Are the Astros looking for a one year free agent bandaid, if so, is Pudge a candidate? Noe, why is Ausmus mortal?
I'll hang up and listen.

Interesting Pudge Rodriguez stat: in the 2003 postseason, he had the number of BB as he did all of last year (in 129 games). 9.

1. You're thinking of Max Sapp (they also drafted Jason Castro in the first round of the 2008 draft.) 2. Ask your local Waffle House. The Bus Riders can give you better info, but he's struggled with his weight and hasn't been the player they'd hoped he'd be. 3. Depends on your definition of "legit". If you mean "will he ever catch at the major league level," the verdict is still out. 4. I'd be ok with Pudge, if it were a performance-incentivized contract. Otherwise, I'd look elsewhere.

Also 2003, Lou Santangelo in round 3. If so, how has he been doing? Suck, for both. Is the Coby Clemens catcher experiment still a legit project or was it ever? It is legit. How it fares...? His bat has been better than expected, IMO. He's got no position though. Catcher is his best hope. [/quote]

Max Sapp in round 1 in 2006. Also 2003, Lou Santangelo in round 3.
And then there is the easily forgettable Ralphie Henriquez, 2nd rounder in the 2005 draft; traded for Josh Appel who was subsequently released after an inconsistent showing in Salem.

And my repeated attempts to forget continue to fail.
