7 pitchers with a history of starting.  It will be interesting to see how they get each of these guys their innings.

Q & A with Bogar in today's Lex. paper:

Q: Do you have your rotation in place?

A: We've got six guys that are starters. We're still trying to work through those details now. The organization's still got some things they need to discuss, but we're going to have six guys for five spots -- Jimmy Barthmaier, Evan Englebrook, Juan Gutierrez, Ronnie Martinez, Ryan McKeller and Troy Patton.

Q: How about bullpen roles?

A: We've talked a little bit about it. We've got two lefties and three righties. From their roles last year, we've got a lefty and a righty that can close in (Enyelbert) Soto and (Chad) Reineke. We also have (Jeff) Wigdahl and (Paul) Estrada, who was the set-up guy in Tri-City last year, so we've got two set-up guys righty and lefty. ... Then we've got (Raymar) Diaz and (Ryan) Thompson, who would be our middle guys and spot starters.

If he hasn't been released, and getting minor league transaction info has become exceedingly difficult, he's likely at extended spring training.

 If he hasn't been released

Did the guy get injured or something...from what I remember, he had a decent year last year....walk 8 batters two, three starts in a row, then K 8 bats with minimal walks for two, three starts in a row.  Numbers suggested that he'd regained his stuff, leaving control as the only issue....a big issue at that, but not one that couldn't be corrected, right?

I had this horrible nightmare yesterday evening, but it somehow got me to thikning about the 3rd basemen in the minors. Not wanting to rush anyone or make any suggestion as to the need, but just for the fun of it...

In the Astros minors:
Best defenders at 3rd?
Best sticks that can make their glove seem less important?
Most future potential?
Might have a great year and be ready even as early as late this year?

Thanks

Off-field issues is what I've gotten for his not being on a roster.  No details.  ETA unknown.

That's actually a good question.  There are good defensive thirdbase men in the Astros org.  That hasn't been an issue.

This has been the issue.  Up through last season, none.  However, keep an eye on Saccomanno at CC.  He had a nice year at Salem last season.  Also, I have a notion that this could be a breakout year for Sellers at Lex.

We'll have to see how the 2005 season goes, but none have shown mlb potential at third, yet.  Also, we'll see if the Astros address third in this year's draft.

Late this year, none.  Possible great year addressed above.

Thanks

Sellers?  I don't see him on the Lex roster that was released.

Ack, you're right.  I was looking at older incorrect info.  I need to go to bed.

I was suprised to see him not on the roster.  I think he will be there soon. He was steady at 3rd and made one amazing catch for an unassisted double play during the playoffs. So there were flashes at Greeneville.

Two words regarding Mr. Sellers: roster filler. Guys who are college seniors drafted in the 32nd round are nothing more than that. Good glove or not, the fact that he put up halfway decent numbers at Greeneville in a league designed for players 3-4 years younger than himself doesn't change the equation. Those numbers, by the way, include all of 2 home runs against guys mostly just out of high school. That ain't gonna get you assigned to a full-season league. With a halfway decent draft next June (gotta be hopeful of such given the Astros' extra picks) and some 3B among the mix, that doesn't even necessarily guarantee you a roster spot at Tri-City this season.

I think he'll be on the Tri-City roster.  His role however will depend on who the Astros draft.  This draft is deep with thirdbase men and kids who project as thirdbase men down the line.  But, yeah, if he wants to be considered a prospect he's got to bring power to the plate.  I'm still kicking myself for bringing him up.
