The Astros are now above .500 thanks to a .615 winning percentage since the All-Star break. Unfortunately it appears they will be working to be named “Best of the Rest.” The Astros sit 6 games back of the Thirdinals so this series will help determine who really is the best of the rest. Quick trivia (and mihoba is eligible). When was the last time an Astros/Cardinals series in late August was irrelevant to the post-season picture? I haven’t a clue either (it’s been a while), but I know it wasn’t last year. This time last year the Cards were just 2 games back of the Fucking cubs.

The G’stros finished the season 30 -36, 11 games out of the Western Division lead. They showed some real promise at times this season as one of the youngest teams in the league. After their last game was rained out, Greenwalt, Lyles, & Pedro Gonzalez were called up to Tri Cities. Here is where the G’stros ranked in the final Appy League stats. (more…)

Cecil Cooper said center fielder Michael Bourn would get the majority of the starts in center field during September.
“His command was good. His breaking ball was good,” said Cooper. …
After giving up 11 walks over a total of 7.2 innings in his last two starts, Wandy walked 1 in 7 on Tuesday. What was different?

Remember the days when the Astros’ offense would routinely shut down against mediocre pitching? Those were the days, my friends - I thought they’d never end.
Well, they were back in full force on Monday night, as the Mess forced a split with the “aw, how cute, they think they’re contending!” Astros by the score of 9-1.
It was all over but the shouting after the first inning, when Carlos Delgado, on a fine piece of hitting, took a Moehler offering the other way, just off the base of the foul pole, for a 3-run dinger that would give Mike Pelfrey all the cushion he needed.
(Also pictured: Delgado crushing a WW offering to make it a 7-0 game.)
The Astros never seriously threatened; Blum’s 2 attempts to start a rally were quickly erased by horrific AB’s from Hunter Pence, who continues his downward spiral. Newhan and Wigginton combined to plate the meaningless shutoffkiller in the ninth. (Moral victory! WHOOOP!)
Strosrays waxed eloquent in a sparse GZ.
Hurry, Star Blazers! There are only 31 games left to get the 24 wins you need for 90!
The Astros just split a four-game series with the dickless Mets, and more importantly don’t have to go back to their urine-soaked dogshit stadium anymore. Sometimes even a split is a win.
At 66-65, the Astros look to be stumbling toward a ho-hum .500 season. Nothing to write home about, but at least it’s better than the Red Asses, who are 17 games under .500 and have only won six games all month. The only series they’ve won this month was against the Pirates, who they are tied with in the NL Central basement. After dumping Griffey and Dunn, for the Reds these are definitely the dogshit days of August.
After sweeping four games from the Dickities in Cincinnati earlier this month, another series with the Redlegs may be just what the Astros’ team doctor ordered. Granted, our health plan sucks and it may not pay the bill, but maybe we can at least get some good painkillers out of it.
Sure, there’s major league catchers available everywhere, littering the side walk, GMs have to step over them to get in the building. They could have any other catcher just for the asking. The Astros have ruined season after season with the one they have now. To prove it, McTaggart lists the catchers the Astros have employed besides Brad Ausmus,
The Astros took game 3 of the wraparound against a Mets team that was sweating as if this was a playoff game. The Astros, on the other hand, gave their only real offensive threat, Lance, the day off.

Roy Oswalt made a couple of mistakes early to the tune of three Mets runs and it cost him and the Astros as he was outdueled by Johan Santana in a 3-0 whitewash in the first game of a four-game set at Shea Stadium. (more…)
Your 2008 Astros are pretty much doneski at this point. A late July/early August surge got everyone’s hopes up for a 2005esque run. A quick revert back to bad baseball nipped that plan in the bud. Now we’re back to a Cublike “We’ll get ‘em next year!”. Yee-fuckin-haw.
Alyson Footer reports that Michael Bourn is beginning to think about how to get better for 2009
It was a pretty good night on the farm. Salem had the night off but four of the other five teams came away with wins.
Round Rock got a five run 8th to pull away from Nashville 9-4. Val Majewski had the big blow with a 3 run shot.
Corpus Christi got a solid start from Casey Hudspeth and Drew Sutton hit a homer as a part of a 3 for 4 night in front of the Astros big wigs in town.
“Either way, whether I’m here or in (Class AAA) Round Rock, there are the same things I need to work on, getting more consistent defensively is the big thing I need to work on right now,” Sutton said.
“It’s nice to play well when they’re here, but you try not to keep that in your mind. Honestly, I’m just happy to get a win because it hasn’t been the most fun to come to the park the past week or so because we haven’t been playing well.”
Tip Fairchild survived a shaky 9th to earn his first pro save. (more…)
Tri Cities’ David Flores had a memorable All Star outing as he had the game winning double in the 9th plating fellow Valley Cat B. J. Shuck and another All Star for the win. Flores was the MVP and teammate Phillip Remmell was the MOP (Most Outstanding Pitcher).
“It’s unbelievable. Just to be in the game to start with was special and then playing here in front of a packed house made it even more special,” Flores said. “I was hoping to just make my plays and maybe get a knock or two. It worked out better than I could have expected.”
The ValleyCats return to action tonight.

The Good Guys pooped out a series loss to the Brewers today, putting the magic closing record at 26-9 to finish at Coop’s prescribed 90 wins. The L gets hung on Wandy, who pitched sort-of-kind-of-OK, giving up 3 in five and a third innings of work.

This man would like to remind you that only two of those runs were earned.
