There is some confusion as to how the minor league free agency rules work. Although the usual reference is to six years as far as eligibility, that’s actually a bit of a misnomer. Note these exceptions and/or clarifications:

  • Players on the 40-man roster are not eligible. (Example: Charlton Jimerson)
  • The summer a player is drafted does not count toward the six-year requirement. Thus, a player who was drafted in 2001 will have played six minor league seasons but because 2001 (his draft year) doesn’t count towards eligibility he won’t actually be a free agent until after the 2007 season. (Example: Mike Rodriguez)
  • Players released by an organization who are then signed by another organization don’t have to wait six years to be eligible but will become a FA upon the expiration of their contract with the new club.

There you have it, no more speculation. Could this be the next Lance Berkman or the next Chris Burke type pick? Time will tell.
